Editing the Music Video!

At the moment we have been editing our footage on Final Cut Express and so far everything looks good. However, we are having issues with the syncronization of our music video as we are having trouble matching the song in time with our actors lips. In order to make to fix it we had to cut the clips and add some transitions for make the cuts less obvious to look at and so that it flows well with the song as it is after all a slow song. We have also fixed the lighting for our music video from advice from our teacher as she said that some of the lighting did not reflect on the mood of how the actor was feeling. So in the bits where Olly was thinking about the good times, the lighting had to be lighter and when we was thinking of the bad times or when he is by himself singing, the lighting should be toned down. By doing this, it will express his emotions to the audience. Colour correction only had to be used for some of the clips as most of the others had perfect lighting, for example the scene where they are playing chess.

Grain of Voice and Synaesthesia

Synaesthesia is where you can picture the sounds of the music in your mind, in order to connect with the audience to provide additional pleasure. The way in which this works is that you need to listen to music and work out they way in which the song works and feel the mood of the song. Synaesthesia can evoke a shape or an image which you associate the song with, for example, if the song had drums banging, each bang would created a circle to emphasis the impact of the bang. A good example of this would be White Stripes by Seven Nation Army, as they use triangles, diamonds each tie the drums are played to create synaethesia. More often, cuts are used with synaethesia so that it is in time with the beat, just is normal in music videos whether its a performance or a narrative.

Furthermore, the theory of behind ‘Grain of voice’ by Roland Barthes applies to Synaethesia particularly as Barthes sees the voice as a unique 'expressive tool' that as fore-mentioned is completely unique which allows the singer to create associations for themselves or even a sort of trademark. This ties in with the star image as many have their own distinct voices, fro example Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston who both have a voice that nobody else has heard from anybody else before, thats why Barthes calls it a unique express tool. These artists that stand out purely by using their vocal abilities.
